Movies - Forrest Gump, ShoesA study conducted by the University of Kansas found that people can judge a stranger's personality by looking at the person's shoes with more than 90 per cent of accuracy.

A total of 63 university students participated in the study and they were asked to look at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes that were most commonly worn by the other volunteer group. The group also filled out a personality questionnaire to indicate their characteristics.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. 'Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers,' he wrote in the journal.

As a result, the number of detailed personality traits could be detected including a person's general age, their gender, income, political affiliation and emotional stability.

Interesting outcomes of the study:
  • Expensive shoes belonged to high earners.
  • Flashy and colorful footwear belonged to extroverts.
  • Shoes that were not new but appeared to be spotless belonged to conscientious types.
  • Practical and functional shoes generally belonged to agreeable people.
  • Ankle boots fitted with more aggressive personalities.
  • Uncomfortable looking shoes were worn by calm personalities.

For the second time this month, a commuter's leg was trapped in the gap between the MRT train and the platform.

According to citizen journalism website Stomp, the man fell while trying to alight from the train at 4.20pm on June 13, and his leg got stuck in the gap.

It reported that several commuters tried to help the man by preventing the train doors from closing and attempting to pull his leg out.

A reader who witnessed the incident told Stomp, Hui Yi, said: "As he was alighting, he fell down and people tried to stop the train door from closing. A lady went over to help him pull his leg out before the station staff came over to get the man out. The train ride was disrupted for a short five minutes."

Hui Yi related that before the man fell, he was telling people inside the cabin that he had back pain and was asking people to give up their seat for him.

The netizen added that the man said he wanted to go to Yishun but he did not know how to, and that he wanted to see a doctor.

Facebook plans to introduce real-time bidding for advertising on its site, a technology used by Google and other Web companies to more effectively target ads to consumers.

Ms Annie Ta, a company spokeswoman, said in an interview that prices will be based on the cost per thousand viewers and sold through third-party technology partners. It will debut in "the coming weeks", she said.

With Facebook Exchange, marketers will be able to target people who have perused certain kinds of websites in the past based on cookies, or small pieces of code, that can track activities on the Web. For example, users who have visited travel sites to research trips to Hawaii may later see a promotion on Facebook about hotels in Hawaii.

Facebook has started placing cookies on the Internet browsers of its users, which will be used by its partners to identify members of the social network, Ms Ta said. While there is no way to opt out of this tracking on Facebook's site, the outside vendors will give users an opportunity to block cookies.

An Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officer who claimed that a lorry driver tried to bribe him was jailed for six weeks on Thursday.

Khusin Zam, 49, a staff sergeant, admitted to giving false information in writing to an anti-graft officer on Aug 3, 2011, that a driver came down from his lorry and was holding onto his wallet with some money, and that he immediately rejected it.

The court heard that Khusin was on duty at Woodlands checkpoint on Aug 2, when Mr Neo Ah Un, drove his lorry into the lane meant for motorcycles.

On being questioned, Mr Neo, who had six female passengers from China, said he had made a wrong turn and had intended to go to Woodlands Centre.

Russia were set to be hit by more UEFA sanctions after learning they would spend the next three-and-a-half years facing a six-point deduction for their 2016 European Championship qualifying campaign.

European football's governing body got tough with the country's fans yesterday over the scenes that have marred Euro 2012 and it is set to get worse for the Football Union of Russia (RFS).

And there could be further action to come, with an investigation ongoing into allegations Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie was subjected to monkey chanting in Friday's match.

An "illicit banner" at Tuesday night's game also landed the RFS in hot water, with fans inside the National Stadium in Warsaw displaying a giant 'This is Russia' flag, something that could be deemed to relate to the decades of Moscow control over Poland during the Cold War.

The World Boxing Organization will review Timothy Bradley's shock split-decision victory over Manny Pacquiao, which sparked outrage among observers who thought the Filipino fight king won the bout.

Bradley, who improved to 29-0 with the victory, seized Pacquaio's WBO welterweight world title.

But WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel said in a statement that the body's championship committee would review the fight "to take measures in accordance with the rules of procedure".

Valcarcel said the committee will meet soon and evaluate video of the fight with the help of five "recognized international judges".

Based on "what emerges" the committee will make a recommendation to the WBO.

"I want to clarify that in no way this says that we are doubting the capacity of these judges, which we consider as honest and competent judges," Valcarcel said.

Saturday's bout in Las Vegas saw judge Jerry Roth give Pacquiao the fight 115-113, but C.J. Ross and Duane Ford both had Bradley winning by the same score, despite Pacquiao appearing to land the more damaging blows throughout the contest.

A double-decker bus driver hit Singaporean student Tan Mingwei, 20, and dragged her more than 800m under his vehicle, thinking he had only run over a bottle and a fox, a court in London heard.

Ms Tan, a Cambridge University medical student and the daughter of playwright and academic Tan Tarn How, had just returned from holiday when she was killed by the bus on Sept 30, 2010.

The driver, Shahriar Firouzian, 52, told the police he did not realise he had struck Ms Tan and even stopped to pick up a passenger while the student was trapped under the vehicle, a jury was told. He denies causing death by careless driving.

He recalled running over a bottle and a fox on the road, which corresponded to the points at which the pedestrian was hit by, and then eventually dislodged, from the bus, the prosecution alleged.

Ms Tan had planned to pick up more luggage from a family friend's house before catching a 6am flight to Rome. But as she crossed Pond Street outside Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital at just after 1.45am, she was hit by a bus with Firouzian at the wheel.

Prosecutor Hamish Reid said Firouzian "totally failed" to see the student as he turned into Pond Street.

Firouzian only discovered Ms Tan had been killed the next day. He told the police in a prepared statement: "It was a perfectly normal journey so far as I was aware."

The court heard on Monday that Tan's family, who live in Singapore, are unlikely to attend the trial. The case continues.

TOPLESS FAN
HA HA.
A Croatian civil servant who bared her breasts to celebrate her team's win at Euro 2012 could be disciplined at work, her employers warned on Wednesday.

Topless photos of a joyous Jelena Miksa swamped Internet portals, local media and social networks after Croatia's 3-1 victory over Ireland on Sunday.

But the culture ministry, where Miksa works as a clerk, and said the young woman could be sanctioned for breaking the code of conduct of public employees.

Jelena and her cousin Viktorija from the northern town of Krapina travelled to Poland to support Croatia in their Sunday's opener against Ireland.

After the victory, the women celebrated by pulling their T-shirts high up over their breasts.

"I don't regret anything ... For me the only important thing is how my squad played. Let's go on to win," Jelena Miksa told the Vecernji List daily.

Traffic offences you probably did not know about

Did you know your mobile phone can be forfeited by the police if you are caught using it while driving?

Do you realise you can be fined and even jailed for abruptly changing lanes or tampering with fuel measuring equipment and parking coupons?

Here's a listing of traffic offences and possible sentences that drivers may not be too aware and could do well to take heed of:

Hit-and-run accidents

This is not a suprising offence but it is crucial to know that fleeing from the scene after knocking someone down could result in not just one but multiple charges against you as the intervention of the driver could mean the difference between life and death.

In fleeing the scene after severely injuring a victim, one could have already committed up to four distinct offences under section 84 of the Road Traffic Act (RTA).

(a) Failed to stop after the accident contrary to section 84(1) of the RTA.
(b) Failed to report the accident to the police within 24 hours of the accident contrary to section 84(2) of the RTA.
(c) Failed to render assistance to the victim contrary to section 84(3) of the RTA.
(d) Moving the car without authority from the Police contrary to section 84(4) of the RTA.

Abruptly changing lanes

Possible sentence: Fine of up to $1,000 or jail of up to 3 months for sharply changing lanes on a road without signalling for being in violation of Rule 29 of the Road Traffic Rules.

Rule 29 of the Road Traffic Rules states that "no vehicle shall be driven or ridden upon a road otherwise than in an orderly and careful manner and with due regard for the safety of others."

Use of mobile telephone while driving

Possible sentence: Fine of up to $1,000 or jail for up to six months or both if convicted under section 65B of the Road Traffic Act.

In this capacity, mobile telephone includes any hand held equipment which is designed or capable of being used for telecommunication whilst "use" means to hold it in one hand while using it to communicate with any person.

Plainly put, if one chooses to communicate with another through any means with a phone, that person will be guilty of this offence.

Something you may not have known: The mobile phone can be forfeited by the police.

Alteration of fuel-measuring equipment

Potential sentence: Jail for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $5,000.

Something you may not have known: Even if you were not the one who made the modification, the person having custody of the motor vehicle at the time shall be presumed, until the contrary was proven, to have abetted this alteration of the fuel-measuring equipment.

This may come as a surprise, but under section 6A of the Road Traffic Act, it is an offence to alter the fuel-measuring equipment of a motor vehicle to preventing the quantity of motor fuel in a vehicle to be accurately measured.

Precautionary measure: If you own a second-hand car, it may be best to inspect your fuel gauge lest any tempering is present.

Tampering of Parking Coupons

Possible sentence: A first offender may suffer a maximum penalty of a fine of up to $2,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months, or to both.

For using tampered coupons, one would be in violation of Rule 12 of the Parking Places (Coupon Parking) Rules.

Since that constitutes a conscious and deliberate act of deception with the aim of cheating the public authorities, even a motorist with no prior criminal record and who has barely tampered with a single parking coupon can expect a fine of at least $800.

The penalty imposed is appropriately scaled upwards in accordance with the scale of tampering and the number and/or value of coupons involved.

Drink-driving

Possible sentence: Fine between $1,000 and $5,000 or jail term of up to 6 months if found guilty under section 67 of the Road Traffic Act.

Something you may not have known: One can be charged for this offence even if not driving at the time. As long as he is behind the wheel of a car, it can be presumed he is drink-driving.

Precautionary measure: Since one may be charged for drink-driving even if one is not actually driving a car, drivers who have consumed alcohol would be advised to stop at a designated parking lot and sleep until the effects of intoxication wear off.

Or simply do not drive to drink. Take a taxi instead.

Giving false information to a public servant

Possible sentence: Jail extending to seven years or fine up to $10,000, or both if convicted under section 182 of the Penal Code - for enlisting somebody to 'take the fall for you'.

>>>>> END >>>>>

In addition to these offences, which most drivers ought to have already known about, here are some of the more obscure provisions.

- Sheep or goats can only be driven on a road between midnight and 6am. Furthermore, a sufficient number of drivers must be present to control them. (Section 32(3) of the road traffic rules)

- No person is allowed to wash or clean their vehicle on a road. (Section 30 of the road traffic rules)

- A cyclist has to hold out his hand horizontally and signal manually before changing lanes or stopping(Section 5 of the road traffic (bicycles) rules). These signals must be made in sufficient time to enable traffic to take appropriate action for the avoidance of danger.

- Anybody who interferes with the signals between the in-vehicle unit in a vehicle and an ERP gantry can be fined up to $2,000, imprisoned up to 6 months, or both. (Section 8(1) of of the road traffic (ERP System) Rules 2011

- When a vehicle is stationary on a road, the headlamps must be switched off. (Section 6 of the road traffic (motor vehicles, lighting) rules)

- A driver turning his vehicle must give precedence to pedestrians crossing or starting to cross the pedestrian crossing. (Section 4 of the road traffic (pedestrian crossings) rules)

- Where no special penalty is provided, a first-time offender can be fined up to $1,000 or jailed up to 3 months.

Checkpoint operation is a whole lot more than just “chopping passports”

Checkpoint operation is a whole lot more than just “chopping passports”. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) is responsible for the security of Singapore's borders against the entry of undesirable persons, cargo and conveyances. Home Team Volunteers were at Tuas Checkpoint to find out more.

This handheld gadget may look like a mini vacuum cleaner but it can instantaneously detect threats from explosives, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals or narcotics simply through vapour and particle sampling.

Immigration & Checkpoints Authority’s (ICA) officers are trained to use numerous types of handheld devices like this one.

These devices allow them to carry out non-intrusive inspections and the gadgets alert them instantly of materials of security concern.

ICA’s technological arsenal helps the guardian of Singapore’s gateways ensure that the movement of people, goods and conveyances through the checkpoints is legitimate and lawful.

The devices are among the various gadgets showcased to some 100 Home Team Volunteers during their visit to Tuas Checkpoint on 12 May 2012.

Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Chairman of the Home Team Volunteers Network (HTVN) and former Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Law, was the visit’s guest-of-honour.

Hosted by Tuas Checkpoint Commander, Assistant Commissioner (AC) Tan Hang Tjong, volunteers caught a glimpse of the checkpoint’s daily operations and they learnt how ICA leverages on science and technology to strengthen identification and border security functions.

Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association (SANA) counsellor, Mr Sulinder Singh, 50, found the visit insightful.

“You get to see behind the scenes. If they don’t carry out these measures, security is at stake. So we must appreciate that part,” said Mr Sulinder.

The Tuas Checkpoint Commander added that travelers’ first impression of the country weighs heavily on their confidence in the level of security and control as well as the service provided at the checkpoints.

As such, ICA officers must adopt a “security-focused, service conscious” mindset in today’s global world.

Speaking at the opening of Home Team Volunteers Network’s (HTVN) Tuas Checkpoint visit, HTVN Chairman Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee said it was important for everyone to actively play a part in Singapore’s safety and security. PHOTO: Jessica Shen

HTVN Secretariat and Home Affairs Ministry’s Human Resource Executive, Madam Chua Poh Choo, led one of the groups during the visit.

“It (the visit) also provides volunteers with the opportunity to network with each other and understand the work of other Home Team departments beyond the departments they are volunteering with,” she said.

The checkpoint visit is the third in HTVN’s “Walking with the Home Team” series of visits.
Mr Jeffrey Toon, 52, who has been volunteering with the Volunteer Special Constabulary for the past 25 years, said the session was insightful and is keen to visit other Home Team departments.

The Singapore economy is likely to grow at a faster pace this year than analysts were expecting three months ago, spurring inflationary pressures, a central bank survey of economists said.

Gross domestic product may increase 3 per cent this year, compared with last quarter's survey for a 2.5 per cent gain, the Monetary Authority of Singapore's (MAS) Survey of Professional Forecasters showed.

The economists also upgraded their second-quarter growth forecast to 2.8 per cent, up from 2.5 per cent previously.

Despite the improved outlook, economists said they expect significant downside risks to remain.

Slower growth was seen for the key financial services sector this year, which was trimmed to 2.7 per cent from 4 per cent previously.

The survey also showed GDP growth this year will likely be led by construction expanding 6.2 per cent, compared with the previous 1.7-per-cent estimate.

As for inflation, the forecasters now see the consumer price index rising 4.2 per cent this year, up from 3.5 per cent previously.

Singapore's official forecast is for GDP growth of 1 to 3 per cent this year, with inflation coming in at 3.5 to 4.5 per cent

A new trend is emerging where professional women are willing to pay from $4,000 to $25,000 for vaginal reconstruction to improve their sex lives.

According to a 42-year-old woman known only as Ms He, her sex life was revitalised after she underwent a reconstruction procedure.

She said that before the surgery, her intimate relationship with her boyfriend was affected because of the way her vulva looked.

One of the most common vaginal corrections is vulva reconstruction. Most cases involve the shrinking of extended vulvas.

In the past, most vulva reconstruction surgeries were performed by gynecologists to help women whose genitals became deformed after giving birth.

Such correctional surgeries have been on the rise in the US, UK and Australia since 15 years ago.

Besides vulva reconstruction, some women may also correct the tightness of the vagina.

A Singaporean mountaineer is aiming to become the first South-east Asian to scale K2 - regarded by many as the world's most dangerous peak.

An experienced climber, Mr Khoo Swee Chiow has tackled Everest three times since 1998, stood atop the highest mountains on seven continents and even visited the North and South Poles.

But he said scaling K2 - a 'magnet for mountaineers' - has been a long-cherished dream. 'It inspires me and yet, instils fear,' he added. 'The name itself is so simple and yet, powerful.'

At 8,116m above sea level, the Pakistani mountain is 732m lower than Everest. But a combination of factors renders it more daunting, Mr Khoo explained.

The mixed ground of rock, ice and snow, combined with the steeper incline, means climbers need to be skilled in a variety of techniques. Rockfalls, avalanches and fickle weather are also a real concern.

Sentosa is rolling out another cable car service in 2015 to make it easier for the growing number of visitors to get around the island.

The 860m-long link - half the length of the current cableway linking Sentosa to Mount Faber - will transport visitors within the island between the three main clusters of attractions at Merlion Plaza, Imbiah Lookout and Siloso Point.

The new line will be able to hold up to 38 cabins.

The current three-station link, at 1.72km, holds 68. It was opened in 1974, but has been upgraded four times since.

Kite-flying rules may be tweaked

http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC120614-0000023/Kite-flying-rules-may-be-tweaked

With activities like kite-flying and aeromodelling becoming more popular, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has embarked on a review of the regulations governing such activities.

In a statement yesterday, the CAAS said there is "potential to liberalise" the current restrictions on height and permitted areas for some aerial activities, while maintaining high international aviation safety standards.

The review will include a month-long public consultation exercise, which will close on July 12.

Currently, aerial activities like kite-flying, aeromodelling and hoisting of moored balloons are prohibited within 5km from an airport or airbase.

Beyond the 5km radius, such activities are permitted but are subject to a height limit of 200ft (61m) above ground - approximately the height of a 12-storey building.

Such restrictions ensure safety as these activities can pose hazards to flight operations, such as by distracting pilots during take-off and landing.

Said CAAS Assistant Director-General Soh Poh Theen: "With the advancements in aircraft technology, air navigation systems on the modern aircraft have greatly improved, enabling the creation of more space for such activities where possible."

The consultation paper on the possible changes and related amendments to the legislation is available on the CAAS (www.caas.gov.sg) and REACH (www.reach.gov.sg) websites.

Former radio DJ-turned-Chinese-language school principal, Madam Chang Mei Hsiang, has purchased the Rediffusion brand, its archives and equipment in an effort to bring the iconic radio service back on air.

A press conference has been scheduled on Friday where she will reveal more of her plans.

Mdm Chang told Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao that she had fond memories of Rediffusion, which she joined in 1985 after arriving in Singapore from Taiwan.

At the station, she was among the most popular DJs and had the support of many listeners.

Apart from being a DJ, Mdm Chang also took on the role of programme producer for seven years.

She told Lianhe Zaobao that her intention is to help preserve a part of Singapore's heritage, as the radio station had witnessed the country's development over the past 63 years.

Rediffusion, Singapore's only subscription-based radio broadcaster, went silent from April 30 as losses piled up.

In its heyday, it attracted more than 100,000 subscribers who tuned in for everything from American rock 'n' roll music to Chinese dialect programmes by master storytellers such as Lee Dai Sor, Ng Chia Kheng and Ong Toh.

The broadcaster's decision to sign off sparked calls from listeners, clan associations and even Members of Parliament to preserve dialect programming.

Lance Armstrong Responds to USADA Allegation

By Lance Armstrong

I have been notified that USADA, an organization largely funded by taxpayer dollars but governed only by self-written rules, intends to again dredge up discredited allegations dating back more than 16 years to prevent me from competing as a triathlete and try and strip me of the seven Tour de France victories I earned.

These are the very same charges and the same witnesses that the Justice Department chose not to pursue after a two-year investigation. These charges are baseless, motivated by spite and advanced through testimony bought and paid for by promises of anonymity and immunity.

Although USADA alleges a wide-ranging conspiracy extended over more than 16 years, I am the only athlete it has chosen to charge. USADA’s malice, its methods, its star-chamber practices, and its decision to punish first and adjudicate later all are at odds with our ideals of fairness and fair play.

I have never doped, and, unlike many of my accusers, I have competed as an endurance athlete for 25 years with no spike in performance, passed more than 500 drug tests and never failed one. That USADA ignores this fundamental distinction and charges me instead of the admitted dopers says far more about USADA, its lack of fairness and this vendetta than it does about my guilt or innocence.

Euro 2012: Portugal steal late win over Danes

Portugal's chances had looked increasingly remote with just three minutes remaining after they squandered a two-goal lead.

Goals from Pepe and Helder Postiga had Paulo Bento's side coasting but Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner appeared to have secured a point as he continued his remarkable scoring spree against the Portuguese with both of his country's efforts to take his tally to six in five matches against their European rivals.

The win gave Portugal their first points of the tournament and ensured they go to the last match still in with a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

However Silvestre Varela kept alive Portugal's hopes of qualifying from Group B with a late strike to help his side record a 3-2 win over Portugal in Lviv.

The Porto forward smashed home the winner having come on just four minutes earlier after Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo had missed two straightforward opportunities to put the result beyond Denmark.

Bert van Marwijk's men had shaded the opening exchanges, with Van Persie shooting straight at Manuel Neuer as he sought to atone for a series of missed chances in the Dutch defeat to Denmark.

However it was Mario Gomez who put Germany ahead in the 24th minute with an excellent finish after Bastian Schweinsteiger's through-ball cut the Dutch defence in two. Gomez turned and fired the opener low to Stekelenburg's right.

It was just as well, as the Germans continued to exploit glaring weaknesses in the Dutch defence, particularly down the right flank, and Holger Badstuber should have made it 2-0 in the 37th minute when he headed straight at Stekelenburg from point-blank range.,

But one minute later Germany did have their second from another move originating on the right, Schweinsteiger playing in Gomez who looked up and slammed an unstoppable shot across the keeper from a tight angle.

Arjen Robben slammed a long-range effort straight at Neuer as Dutch frustration began to tell, although they were secure in the knowledge they could not face elimination due to Portugal's earlier win over Denmark.

The Dutch pressure paid off with Van Persie finally breaking his Euro 2012 deadlock in style.

The striker turned and drifted across from the left flank before drilling a brilliant finish past Neuer from the edge of the box to give his side hope with 17 minutes of the match still to play.

The Dutch were suddenly dominant, with Van Persie having a penalty appeal waved away before Robben expressed his frustration at being substituted by exiting the pitch on the far side of the field in front of the Dutch fans.

The result means Germany need just a point from their final Group B game against Denmark to guarantee progression, while Holland need to beat Portugal and hope for both a Germany win and a swing in goal difference.

BPL: Di Matteo confirmed as Chelsea manager

Despite Roberto Di Matteo's success there was speculation Chelsea would look elsewhere for a full-time boss, with Pep Guardiola apparently atop their wish-list following his departure from Barcelona.

The Blues have now moved to confirm the Italian as their permanent boss on a full-time basis on a two-year contract just three weeks after he led them to their first Champions League title while in interim charge.

Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas for the final 11 weeks of the season and inspired a stunning rejuvenation of a side that had been deemed too old, as they won the FA Cup before their famous penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Di Matteo, who turned 42 last month, was ecstatic to take on the role permanently.

"I'm obviously delighted to have been appointed as manager and first-team coach," Di Matteo said.

"We all achieved incredible success last season that made history for this great club. Our aim is to continue building on that and I'm already planning and looking forward to the squad's return for pre-season."

Manchester United, the world's best supported soccer club, has ditched its plans for an Asian stock market flotation and is preparing to list in the United States, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

After first eyeing a Hong Kong IPO, the former English soccer champions had planned a US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) listing in Singapore in the second half of last year before putting plans on hold because of market turmoil.

United, which has been English league champions a record 19 times and features players such as England's Wayne Rooney, declined to comment on the report.

The club's American proprietors, the Glazer family, are well known in the United States as owners of American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as First Allied Corp, which owns and leases shopping centres.

Finnish lawmakers on Wednesday forced a member of the opposition Finns Party to resign from an influential parliamentary committee after he was fined for making racist remarks, the latest in a string of setbacks for the anti-euro party.

Finns Party lawmaker Jussi Halla-aho was fined by the Supreme Court on Friday for comments posted on his personal blog in 2008 which linked Islam to paedophilia and Somalis with theft. Somalis are a major immigrant group in Finland.

Members of all political parties other than the Finns Party agreed on Wednesday that Halla-aho should quit as chairman of a parliamentary committee dealing with immigration and state security.

He resigned from the post, although he will stay in parliament.

A tourist fell to his death from Marina Bay Sands (MBS) SkyPark on Tuesday afternoon, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Police told Yahoo! Singapore that they received a call for assistance at Bayfront Avenue around 3pm.

Paramedics at the scene then pronounced the 46-year-old Dutchman dead.

According to the Chinese daily, MBS stationed more than 10 staff to barricade the area with a black screen to prevent passer-bys from probing. Security officers were also deployed to prevent unauthorised access.

The report also added that the tourist was not staying at MBS, but a guest from a nearby hotel.

This is the first such incident since the SkyPark's opening in June 2010. The SkyPark is 57 storeys high and more than 200m above ground level.

However, to prevent visitors from falling, the outer perimeter of the SkyPark is surrounded by 2-metre-high screens and steel ropes.

A spokesman from MBS confirmed that a dead body had been found on the grass verge along the East Coast Parkway (ECP) near MBS.

Police have classified this case as an unnatural death and are investigating.

Salomon Kalou's agent claims his client would be willing to discuss a summer switch to Liverpool, but says there has been no approach as yet.

The Reds are still in the process of finalising their transfer plans, with Brendan Rodgers having only recently inherited the managerial reins from Kenny Dalglish.

The new boss at Anfield worked with Kalou during his time as a coach at Chelsea and is reported to be an admirer of the Ivory Coast international.

It is being suggested that an official approach could be on the cards, with Kalou's contract at Stamford Bridge having come to an end.

Hundreds of people have petitioned Saudi King Abdullah to allow women to get behind the wheel on the first anniversary of the Women2Drive campaign launched in June 2011.

The signatories, who numbered nearly 600 on Wednesday, are asking the king of the only country in the world that forbids women to drive, to "encourage women who have obtained driving licences from neighbouring countries to begin driving whenever necessary."

They also called on the monarch to "establish driving schools for women and (begin) issuing licences."

The petition thanked the king, a cautious reformer, for giving women the right to vote in municipal elections set to take place in 2015, saying "our initiative is not aimed at violating laws."

"We only want to enjoy the right to drive like all women over the world," said the petition signed by Manal al-Sherif, the icon of an Internet campaign launched last year urging Saudi women to defy the driving ban.

BREAKING NEWS! Harry Redknapp sacked by Tottenham as Daniel Levy targets David Moyes

Harry Redknapp has parted company with Tottenham Hotspur after the chairman, Daniel Levy, refused to grant him the contract and assurances that he wanted. Levy has made Everton's David Moyes his No1 target to take over as manager.

Redknapp's exit was settled on Wednesday night and a formal statement of confirmation from Tottenham is expected on Thursday. The 65-year-old reached a settlement on the final year of his deal, which is worth £3m, after lawyers from both sides met for discussions.

An attempt by Spurs to lure Moyes is now set to begin. Moyes has 12 months to run on his Goodison Park contract and, despite several conversations with the chairman, Bill Kenwright, since the end of the season, he has yet to commit to an extension to his 10-year tenure.

The 49-year-old plans to hold further talks with Kenwright as he seeks assurances over Everton's future and a transfer budget and, although that is likely to prove a source of frustration once again, he has no intention to quit the club this summer. That stance may change, however, if he receives an approach from Tottenham and they make it plain that he is their top target.

There has been no approach so far from Tottenham to Moyes, who is on holiday in the US and is due to travel to the European Championship in the next few days.

Redknapp had gone on the offensive in recent weeks, appointing the agent Paul Stretford to handle his demand for what was effectively a new four-year contract and urged Levy to tie him down quickly in order to avoid unsettling the players.

A bald eagle known to locals as Eva delivers a just-caught
fish to her eaglets. Eva's mate Eddie was killed by a bus
last year, but she now has a new mate and young to raise.
It's probably what Eddie would have wanted: new life and new hope blossoming in the wake of tragedy.

Motorists who traveled the 520 bridge last August were sad to learn that a bald eagle they had come to know as Eddie, regularly seen on lampposts along the bridge route, mysteriously flew in front of a bus and was killed.

It wasn't clear whether he had been trying to pluck a dead animal off the roadway, or perhaps saw his reflection in a bus window and tried to scare it away.

At the time, many wondered: What would become of his mate, known as Eva? Bald eagles typically mate for life. Would she leave the area, abandoning the nest the couple shared above the golf course at Broadmoor Country Club?

The answers are now known. Eva and another male eagle are at home on the nest, and recent photos show a new crop of eaglets. Both adult birds have been bringing small fish to the nest for their offspring.

Bird-watcher and blogger Larry Hubbell, who follows the eagles' lives and provides reports to readers at unionbaywatch.blogspot.com, said the saga of fragility and resilience reinforces the importance of protecting urban wetlands.

"Eva's focus on the future demonstrates nature's cure for bereavement," Hubbell wrote, adding that "once again there is new life in the nest that Eddie built."

Pawnbroker Maxi-Cash today launched an initial public offering (IPO) in Singapore, despite the volatile markets, to raise about S$16.8 million.

In a statement, Maxi-Cash said it was offering 56 million new shares priced at S$0.30 each, in conjunction with its listing on the Catalist board.

The IPO consists both a placement tranche and a public offer.

The size of the placement tranche is 53.75 million shares, while the remaining 2.25 million shares will be offered to retail investors in Singapore.

Maxi-Cash said the IPO shares represent nearly 19 per cent of the group's enlarged share capital of 296 million shares immediately post-IPO.

Of the estimated net proceeds of about S$15.1 million, Maxi-Cash said it intended to channel S$6 million to fund the expansion of its business operations, while the balance would be used for general corporate and working capital requirements.

A woman and her son have been arrested for using their old address to apply for illegal loans.

The suspects, aged 50 and 29, were arrested on Monday in the vicinity of Sengkang Square.

They are alleged to have used their former address to borrow from loansharks, which resulted in the loansharks harassing the current owners of the home.

Investigations revealed that the duo had failed to report the change of their residential address, which is an offence under the National Registration Act.

They each face up to five years in jail and/or a S$5,000 fine.

If found guilty of providing false contact information to borrow from loansharks, they could be jailed up to 12 months each.

Investigations are ongoing.

A police officer was killed when his car was crushed underneath a bus in a horror crash in China.

The bus, which is believed to have been following the patrol car, crashed into the back of a patrol car on the outskirts of Beijing.

Police arrested the driver of the bus and an investigation is underway into why the bus failed to stop.

The accident happened on a ring road near the Sanlitun shopping centre on the outskirts of the city at around 1pm yesterday.

The bus came to a rest on top of the police car following the collision.

Passengers on board the 39-seat vehicle were seen smashing the vehicle's windows to escape following the accident, asiaone.com reported.

The officer who was killed worked for the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau's Chaoyang district bureau.

There are believed to have been 30 security volunteers working with the police on board the bus, according to reports.

It is thought the police car driver was leading them to a holiday resort called Xiedao where they were due to undergo training when the crash happened.

No one on board the bus was injured in the collision and the vehicle is undergoing checks to see if there were any mechanical faults with it.
