A police officer was killed when his car was crushed underneath a bus in a horror crash in China.

The bus, which is believed to have been following the patrol car, crashed into the back of a patrol car on the outskirts of Beijing.

Police arrested the driver of the bus and an investigation is underway into why the bus failed to stop.

The accident happened on a ring road near the Sanlitun shopping centre on the outskirts of the city at around 1pm yesterday.

The bus came to a rest on top of the police car following the collision.

Passengers on board the 39-seat vehicle were seen smashing the vehicle's windows to escape following the accident, asiaone.com reported.

The officer who was killed worked for the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau's Chaoyang district bureau.

There are believed to have been 30 security volunteers working with the police on board the bus, according to reports.

It is thought the police car driver was leading them to a holiday resort called Xiedao where they were due to undergo training when the crash happened.

No one on board the bus was injured in the collision and the vehicle is undergoing checks to see if there were any mechanical faults with it.
