Ferrari taxi crash - Chinese embassy speaks up

In a rare move, the Chinese embassy has released a letter urging its citizens living in Singapore to be mindful of their conduct and to respect local laws.

The letter was written in light of the tragic Rochor Road Ferrari-taxi crash, the Straits Times reported.

It was submitted to the newspaper on Wednesday (16 May).

In the letter, the embassy, which is located at Tanglin Road, expressed regret over the accident that claimed three lives.

The letter, which was written in Chinese, said: “We offer our sincere and deep condolences to the victims and their families.

“We hope that Chinese citizens living in Singapore will respect life, value the safety of themselves and others, abide by its laws and regulations, and live responsibly and gracefully. We hope that such tragic and unfortunate incidents will not recur.”

The limited edition Ferrari 599 GTO’s fatal crash also left two people injured.

The accident has caused Singaporeans and Chinese netizens alike to condemn the driver of the million-dollar-car, Ma Chi, a 31-year-old investor from Sichuan, China.

One of those killed in the accident is 52-year-old taxi driver Cheng Teck Hock, a sole bread winner who leaves behind a wife and three children.

According to the newspaper, some called the late Mr Ma a spoilt, rich brat and a disgrace to China. Others suggest a stereotype that rich Chinese nationals always take advantage of their wealth and relations to do as they wish while ignoring local laws.

Tony Du, president of the Tian Fu Club for new Chinese migrants, told the newspaper: “There are a lot of Chinese nationals here, be it as visitors, those on work passes or PRs. We do need to respect Singapore’s culture, practices and regulations.”

Mr Du said that he is aware that the recent accident has sparked much sadness and pain amongst Singaporeans. He added: “While it is an accident, it is a reminder for us to all be careful and to carefully reflect upon what has happened.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has become the latest leader to speak about the crash.

On his Facebook page, the prime minister wrote that he has instructed the Traffic Police to be stricter with irresponsible drivers.
