Self-help group Mendaki said on Friday (Oct 10) has lodged an official complaint over people falsely claiming to be collecting donations on its behalf.
Several members of the public had notified Mendaki of such cases. The most recent alert involved a man who went around Tampines HDB estates selling Muslim calenders to solicit funds and who introduced himself as an employee of the organisation.
The organisation also advised the public to be wary of fraudulent donation drives done in its name, and to alert the police or the organisation should they encounter such situations.
Charitable organisations that are licensed to solicit cash donations would have a Collector's Certificate of Authority from the National Council of Social Service.
Fundraisers must carry a copy of this certificate or a copy of the police permit, and the public can ask to see these documents from people asking for donations, Mendaki said.
