A 35-year-old Defence Ministry diplomatic and administrative officer (PTD) trainee drowned while undergoing training at the Force 136 Camp of Territorial Army Regiment 505 at Sungai Miang here yesterday.

Father of two Aidy Hasni Abu Hassan, from Kuala Lumpur, was about to cross an irrigation canal using a rope when he lost his grip and dropped into the 6m-deep water canal at 2.30pm.

District police chief Superintendent Yahya Othman said the victim, who was among 243 officers taking part in the outdoor programme, was swept away by the strong currents.

"One of the facilitators then pulled the victim from the water and performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation before taking him to Pekan Hospital.

"The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival and a post-mortem confirmed that he had drowned," he said, adding the victim's family later claimed the body for burial in his hometown of Alor Star.
