Condos tells swimming coaches to hand over 10% of pay

Swimming coaches who conduct classes at condominium pools are being asked to pay 10 per cent of their monthly earnings to the condo's management.

If they do not pay up, they will be told to conduct their lessons elsewhere.

For some, this is on top of a $200 deposit they make in case they break any of the condo's rules.

According to the Building and Construction Authority, only five categories of people have to follow by-laws passed by condos.

These include 'the management corporation, the subsidiary proprietors, any mortgagee-in-possession, lessee or occupier'.

Swimming coaches do not fall into any of the five categories.

Coaches at Azalea Park, the latest condo to introduce the move, said they asked for the rationale behind the by-law but have yet to receive a reply.

Calling the by-law ridiculous, coaches say they teach at the private pools at the request of the residents.

Residents are split about the by-law. Some say the levy will be passed on the students who do not see the point of paying more just to use the pool in the condo since they pay maintenance fees.

Others who support the levy believe it deters coaches from teaching too many students and crowding the pool.
