Two Arrested In Hougang For Loansharking Activities

On 26 September 2011 at about 9.30 pm, through follow-up investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division arrested a 21-year-old man in the vicinity of Hougang Ave 3 who is believed to have committed several cases of loanshark harassment in Ang Mo Kio, Hougang and Clementi housing estates with another accomplice.

Through protracted investigations, the identity of the accomplice was established and a 23-year-old man, was arrested in the vicinity of Lorong 7 Toa Payoh. Mobile phones containing suspected debtors’ records, internet banking tokens and ATM cards were found in the suspects’ possession and seized as case exhibits.

The two suspects will be charged in Court on 28 September 2011 for loanshark harassment under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
