8 bodies in 1 month: No serial killer on the loose, says Police

Police are dispelling Internet rumours that serial killers are responsible for the eight dead bodies found in reservoirs and waterways in Singapore in the last month. One ex-police officer says, "It's just a coincidence."

In a news report today (Jul 28), local police say that the recent body count of eight bodies from Jun 20 to Jul 23 is not an increase in the number of murders from previous years.

In fact, there were more murders in the first half of last year -- 11 compared to 8 for the same period this year.

Out of the 8 bodies found between this year, only one case has been classified as murder by the police -- that of 36-year-old Celine Ng Swee Peng, whose decomposed body was found in the forested area along Clementi road on Jul 5.

Responding to online speculation that serial killers are behind the murders, former police officer Lim Ah Soon, who was in the force for almost 30 years said, "Sometimes, it's just a coincidence. In the past, we went through spells like that too."

"Just because most of the bodies happen to be found floating in water is hardly enough evidence for a serial killer. Serial killers seek victims who share similar traits -- for example, Jack the Ripper only went after female prostitutes.

"What is more worrying, to me, is the frequency with which these bodies have been popping up. June 20...June 22...July 1... There's only a few days between the gruesome discoveries!

"I'm much more concerned with the causes. Like some netizens have been wondering -- is it the high pressure of living in Singapore, or debts from our new casinos, or the looming threat of the price hike in public transport that is driving us to death?"
