Rescue shaft reaches miners

SAN JOSE MINE (Chile) - SIXTY-SIX agonising days after their gold and copper mine collapsed above them, 33 miners were offered a way out on Saturday as a drill broke through to their underground purgatory.

The 'Plan B' drill won a three-way race against two other drills to carve a hole wide enough for an escape capsule to pull the miners out one by one.

But now comes a difficult judgment call: The rescue team must decide whether it's more risky to pull the miners through unreinforced rock, or to insert tons of heavy steel pipe into the curved shaft to protect the miners on their way up. MORE

Top amateur football teams in S'pore form League of Champions

SINGAPORE: There are more than 400 amateur football teams in Singapore - an indication of how vibrant the sport is at the grassroots level.

These teams play in nine different amateur leagues. But they have now come together to form the League of Champions.

The best from each of the leagues will square off in the contest.

12 teams will be competing and a draw was held on Saturday.

The competition kicks off on 23 October, with the finals to be played on 30 October at the Jalan Besar Stadium. SOURCE

Shooting president laments poor facilities in Singapore

NEW DELHI -- Singapore shooters have been producing medals on a daily basis at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, bagging a total of 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals after five days of competition at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Centre in New Delhi.

Singapore Shooting Association (SSA) president Chng Seng Mok can’t help but reflect on what he called “ inadequate and mostly out-dated facilities” his charges have to train with in Singapore.
“Back home we don’t have proper shooting facilities to train our shooters and hold competitions,” Chng told MediaCorp. “When international competitors come to Singapore, they laugh at what we have at our shooting range. They wonder why a rich country like Singapore cannot afford a proper one.” MORE

Commonwealth Games: Singapore shooters bag 2 more medals

Singapore has secured two more medals from shooting on the sixth day of competition at the Commonwealth Games.

In the Men's 25m Centrefire Pistol Pairs event, Gai Bin and Poh Lip Meng took bronze with a score of 1139.40 points.

Earlier, Cheng Jian Huan and Jasmine Ser combined for a silver medal in the Women's 10m Air Rifle Pairs. They scored 790.52 points.

Death video e-mailed by Aussie cops (VIDEO)

MELBOURNE - AUSTRALIAN police circulated an Internet video of an Indian man being electrocuted on top of a train and joked that it 'might be a way to fix the Indian student problem', a report said on Saturday.
The video shows graphic images of a man being jolted by overhead power lines as onlookers screamed, and did the rounds among Melbourne officers following a series of violent attacks against Indians. MORE

Man charged with murder that took place over 20 years ago at Blk 529 AMK

SINGAPORE : A 46-year-old man has been charged with murder, in a case that took place more than 20 years ago.

Ong Seng Chuan is believed to be one of three men who robbed a coffee shop and killed the owner, 74-year-old Ling Ha Hiang, on 19 December 1989.

Mr Ling, who ran Tien Wah Eating House at Block 529, Ang Mo Kio Street 51, was found with his hands and legs bound behind his back.

Commonwealth Games: Singapore's women paddlers win Gold

Singapore's women paddlers Feng Tianwei, Wang Yuegu and Li Jiawei on Friday scored another gold for Singapore after beating India 3-0.

The three won their respective matches to stamp their supremacy at the Games. MORE

Premier League approves Liverpool takeover

LONDON: The English Premier League confirmed on Friday it has approved the bitterly contested takeover of Liverpool by US-based New England Sports Ventures.

A statement from the Premier League said the body had given the go-ahead to the deal, meaning only a pending legal challenge to the takeover by owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett stands in the way of the sale. MORE

Gunman injures two children at California school

LOS ANGELES: Two children were injured Friday when an apparently deranged gunman opened fire in a California school, before being chased and detained by two construction workers who were nearby.

"The guy came to do destruction," local resident Terry Lynn told the news station. "We were lucky," he said, adding that the man seemed "crazy... He was saying something about the president, and just ranting.

"He was obviously not coherent."

Manager 'too drunk to be aware of his behaviour' has jail term cut

SINGAPORE - A 42-year-old marketing manager who assaulted police officers while he was drunk has successfully appealed for his jail term to be cut.

Ning Xianglin, a permanent resident, had kicked an officer in the abdomen and spat at another when they turned up at his home on March 8 last year, the court heard. Ning's girlfriend had called the cops after he allegedly slapped her.

Justice Tay Yong Kwang allowed the appeal and cut Ning's jail term to one-and-a-half months but warned him not to flout the law again. MORE

Proton recalls 16,000 cars

MALAYSIA'S national carmaker Proton has recalled almost 16,000 cars of two of its models over malfunctioning risks.

Proton said in a statement received on Friday that it was recalling Gen2 and Satria Neo cars made between 2004 and 2008. It urged owners of the models to bring them in for an inspection.

Routine tests have found irregularities with the clock spring - which connects switches and air bags to radio, horn and cruise control, the statement said. These include friction noise within the steering wheel, activation of horn or car lights without warning, audio control switch malfunction and deployments of the driver's side air bag. MORE

Woman gets jail for taking speeding rap

A WOMAN who agreed to take the rap for a friend's speeding offence was sentenced to four weeks' jail on Friday.

Lim Ah Hwa, 39, is appealing against the sentence. Bail of $10,000 was offered.

The divorcee and single mother of three admitted to intentionally perverting the course of justice by assuming criminal liability for the offence committed by sales executive Charlie Lim Chau Lee, 51, on Aug 18, 2008.

Charlie and his friend, Benny Sng Kwee Hock, 54, were dealt with last month. They were given six months and six weeks' jail respectively. MORE

SGD to strengthen against USD till year end

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Dollar is likely to break the 1.30 level against the US Dollar as it continues to strengthen for the rest of the year.
