A construction worker who threw a glass bottle at a police officer during the Little India riot last December was sentenced to 12 months’ jail on Tuesday (Dec 2).

Periyaiah Ganesan, an Indian national who turns 26 next week, pleaded guilty to one charge of assaulting Corporal Saadiah Hamzah, who was trying to suppress the riot.

He was having drinks with two friends at Veerasamy Road on Dec 8 last year, when he received a call from another friend informing him that one of their countrymen had been killed in an accident. The trio headed to Race Course Road sometime after 10.15pm and split up due to the growing crowd.

Corporal Saadiah, 40, was running back to her fast response car for a shield and helmet when Periyaiah approached her and threw a glass bottle at her. She evaded it and he ran into the crowd after she shouted at him.

Periyaiah met up again with his two friends and was arrested at about 2.20am the following morning at a restaurant opposite Mustafa Centre.
