Substitute Papiss Cisse struck twice as Newcastle United secured a 2-1 win to end Chelsea's 23-match unbeaten run in all competitions and inflict their first Barclays Premier League defeat of the season.

The Senegal international scored four minutes after coming on in the second half before adding what proved to be a decisive second goal with 12 minutes to play, ensuring Jose Mourinho has still never masterminded a league win at St James' Park.

Graham Dorrans missed a first-half penalty as Hull City and West Brom extended their respective winless runs with a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

A flat Liverpool failed to break down Sunderland as the two sides played out a goalless draw at Anfield

Brendan Rodgers' side came into the clash buoyed by back-to-back victories over Stoke City and Leicester City but they fell short of making it three consecutive league wins for the first time this season.

But the Brazilian failed to provide the creative spark Liverpool so desperately needed.

Charlie Austin scored and was sent off as Queens Park Rangers beat Burnley 2-0 in a crucial match at the bottom of the Premier League on Saturday.

The former Burnley striker fired home his eighth goal of the season in the 74th minute to help lift the hosts out of the relegation zone, but saw red just two minutes later. Leroy Fer had given the home side the advantage early in the second half, before the in-form Austin sealed the victory.

Stoke City survived a second-half comeback from 10-man Arsenal to claim a 3-2 victory from an enthralling Barclays Premier League match on Saturday.

Mark Hughes' men appeared to be cruising to maximum points after three first-half goals seemingly put Stoke in complete command.

Peter Crouch opened the scoring after just 19 seconds before Bojan Krkic and Jonathan Walters both netted to leave Arsene Wenger's men facing an embarrassing defeat. However, a disallowed Bojan effort turned the match in favour of Arsenal, who pulled one back courtesy of Santi Cazorla's 68th-minute penalty.

Aaron Ramsey made it 3-2 two minutes later with a stunning volley to set up a grandstand finish. But the dismissal of defender Calum Chambers left Arsenal with too much of a mountain to climb, as Stoke held on to leave Wenger's men still waiting for a first win at the Britannia Stadium since February 2010.

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace at White Hart Lane on Saturday as the hosts were left to rue a lack of cutting edge. The home side were looking to win back-to-back home matches in the Barclays Premier League for the first time this season, but failed to break down a resolute Palace backline.

Yaya Toure scored the only goal of the match as Manchester City beat Everton 1-0 to close the gap on Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea to three points.

The Ivorian tucked away a first-half penalty to earn the champions their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions and capitalise on Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United earlier in the day, although one low note for City was an injury to Sergio Aguero which forced his withdrawal after just seven minutes.

Everton were unfortunate not to equalise late on when Joe Hart produced a stunning save to keep out Romelu Lukaku and the defeat means they have taken just one point from their past three BPL matches as their inconsistent domestic form continues.
