Five vehicles brake to avoid one car

He was trying to change lanes to the right when the lorry in front of him suddenly braked, swerving towards his vehicle.

In less than two seconds, shattered glass from his windscreen rained down onto Mr Loo Cheng Kan’s face and hands after the vehicles collided.

The driver of the lorry in front of them, Mr Lam Chee Khuen, 55, was also trapped when his vehicle hit the rear of a trailer.

In the end, the accident on the left-most lane of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) at about 2pm yesterday affected two trailers and three lorries, all because a blue Volkswagen car had broken down on the side of the road.

The driver of the trailer, who only wanted to be known as Mr Safuan, 53, had jam-braked to avoid colliding with a lorry in front of him. A green lorry behind him crashed into the trailer and swerved left, injuring the driver who was alone and is in his 60s. The white lorry, driven by Mr Loo Cheng Kan, 57, collided into the green lorry and swerved right, injuring Mr Loo's passenger, who is in his 20s.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman said that the injured driver and passenger were trapped in their respective lorries. Both of them were rescued with hydraulic rescue tools and conveyed to the National University Hospital.
