When he was 10, he was molested by his martial arts coach for more than a year, he claimed.

Nanyang Technological University Economics Professor Kaiwen Leong, 30, dropped this bombshell in his book, Singapore's Lost Son: How I Made It From Dropout To Millionaire Princeton PhD.

He said the coach would often tell him to arrive early for class or help with carrying the equipment.

Dr Leong claimed the coach would then touch his private parts.

This went on for more than a year, leaving him traumatised.

For six years, he was unable to concentrate on his studies.

When he tried to tell his parents about it, they dismissed it as an attempt to skip classes. His grades suffered as a result.
The coach eventually got in trouble with the law after some other parents complained.

In his book, Dr Leong also talks about how he later took a relief teacher's advice to continue his tertiary studies overseas.

He had been expelled from four junior colleges (JCs) for the same reason: calling his teachers "insane", reported Shin Min Daily News.

He added that the teachers from the four JCs had said he had no chance of getting a degree from a top university in the US.

Determined to prove them wrong, he sat for his A levels as a private candidate and was offered a place in Boston University.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics and mathematics in early 2006, he went on to do his master's in economics (2006), and a year later, mathematics.

With a scholarship he earned, he studied for another master's and a PhD in economics at Princeton University in 2011.

With his book, he hopes to reach out to youths.

"I want to tell them that with hard work, nothing is impossible," he said.
