A former teaching scholar who was found with child pornography while studying in the UK has been charged with underage sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The former Hwa Chong student was given a six-month sentence suspended for two years, which means he would not have to face jail time if he does not re-offend within two years.

Jonathan Wong, 25, now faces 10 charges in total, including seven counts of having sex with a minor, and three charges of committing indecent acts.

According to the report in Lianhe Wanbao, Wong returned to Singapore in January last year, where he found a job as a sub-editor at a publishing firm.

The offences allegedly occurred from February to June. The Shin Min Daily News reported that Wong, who had a girlfriend then, got to know the teen in church.

The pair communicated online regularly and were close; she addressed him as "daddy" and he called her his "daughter".

Wong discussed topics on sex - including masturbation and oral sex, using 'sex education' as an excuse. He then had sex with the girl at his home and in a public toilet, and also took nude photos of her.

The case only came to light when a teacher contacted the girl's father, who is overseas, to inform him that she had been performing poorly at school. The family resides in Melbourne, Australia, where her father is based.

The girl eventually told her father about her relationship with Wong, and he flew back to Singapore to make a police report.

Wanbao understands that the teen, now 16, has moved to Melbourne to be with her family.
