She used to teach at the Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College in Selangor, Malaysia. But now, Melviana Johnson Fu, 30, is in remand in Singapore after she was charged in February with three counts of theft involving more than $33,000 in cash.

Fu, a Malaysian, allegedly stole from three men in two different hotel rooms and a condominium unit.

1) Fu is alleged to have targeted her first victim, Mr Aung Than Kyi, in a room in Hotel 81 Chinatown at about 12.40am on Oct 3, 2010.

She is accused of stealing his trousers containing items, including more than $6,400 in different currencies, a mobile phone worth $800, a car key and two credit cards.

2) Sometime in December last year, it is believed that Fu stole from another man, Mr Mendonco Tolentino Manoj, in a unit at the Arte condominium at Jalan Raja Udang near Balestier Road.

She allegedly made off with his wallet containing items, including personal cards and $4,800 in cash.

3) Fu is also said to have stolen $22,000 in cash belonging to the third man, Mr Mohd Anwar Chan Wah, at about midnight on Dec 6 last year.

She allegedly committed this offence in a room at the plush Hotel Michael in Resorts World Sentosa. Mr Mohd Anwar, 38, filed a police report later that morning and officers from Clementi Police Division arrested Fu at about 2.15am at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel on Feb 23.

The New Paper found out via an online search that as a student, Fu studied at a Malaysian research university and was involved in several academic papers, one of which was published in an international journal.

If convicted of theft, she could be jailed up to seven years and fined for each charge.
