Activities galore on World Water Day, March 24

World Water Day is held annually on March 22 to raise awareness on the importance of caring for water and water sustainability.

Age-defying activities from the cleaning up of water bodies, water monitoring, guided nature walks to cycling and kayaking will be taking place on March 24 to commemorate this event.

This year, more than 100 community partners will be involved, building on last year’s success, said the Public Utilities Board (PUB) in a press release on Wednesday.

One highlight is an activity involving more than 10,000 participants carrying small blue pails as they walk, cycle and paddle for the water cause across waterways, around reservoirs and between ABC Waters sites. This is symbolic of how people in developing countries have to walk an average 6 km every day to fetch water.

MacRitchie Reservoir will launch of the Learning Trail Passport, which is a collection of available learning trails at seven ABC Waters sites. Conducted by community members and students, each trail brings the Singapore Water Story to life, while highlighting the unique history and ABC features that contribute both aesthetic and functional purposes at each site.

Over at the Marina Barrage, which is the main rally point for the event, close to 500 cyclists, kayakers and dragonboaters converge after navigating through routes that will bring them to key ABC Waters sites.

Cycling interest groups Lovecycling.sg and Joyriders will cover both Eastern and Western catchment loops, stopping by several ABC Waters sites enroute to Marina Barrage, while 200 kayakers - from ages six to 74 - and dragonboaters will paddle 5km from Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront to Marina Barrage.

To complement activities at Marina Barrage, other events will be held concurrently at selected ABC Waters sites around the island.

Kayaking workshops will take place at Lower Seletar Reservoir, Sengkang Floating Wetland and Jurong Lake will be held while Walks for Water will take place across seven sites - Marina Barrage, Alexandra Canal, Punggol Waterway, Lorong Halus, Jurong Lake, Lower Seletar Reservoir and the newly opened Kallang River @ Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

A glossy photo compilation of the 17 ABC Waters sites, titled Knowing your ABCs, organised by the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and PUB will also be held.

Leveraging on this international event, Singapore Post has also launched the “Reservoirs of Singapore”, a collection of stamp designs by Don Low of Urban Sketchers, a local sketching interest group, profiling 10 different reservoirs in Singapore.
