New Zealander chokes to death on board Jetstar flight

A New Zealander working in Singapore died on board a Jetstar flight to Auckland, after he apparently choked on his inflight meal.

Mr Robert Rippingale, 31, who worked in aviation logistics, was heading home with his girlfriend, architect Vanessa Preechakul, 27, on Aug 29 when it happened.

Shortly after take-off, meals were served. As Mr Rippingale was eating his beef dish, Ms Preechakul noticed that he was shaking quite violently.

'I thought he was laughing because he was watching a movie, and I asked him what was so funny. There was no answer and he was still shaking, and it just didn't feel right,' the Thai national told The Straits Times over the phone from Mr Rippingale's home in Auckland on Sep 4.
