Man to face court over bomb hoax siege

A man will appear in a Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday charged with a range of crimes after he triggered a 12-hour standoff with police by marching into a law office with his daughter and claiming he had a bomb in his backpack.

A police tactical team forced its way into the office and overpowered the 52-year-old man after negotiations began to crumble on Tuesday night, police said. He had earlier released his 12-year-old daughter unharmed.

Police subsequently alleged the bomb threat proved to be a hoax.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that he is Albert Bates, who was a prominent Aboriginal activist in the 1980s and 1990s.
