Yesterday, Mr Michael Palmer, the Member of Parliament for Punggol East, was nominated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to replace Mr Abdullah, who retired from politics before the polls, as the next Speaker of Parliament when it opens on Oct 10.

The 42-year-old Eurasian told Today: "It is a great honour and I am deeply humbled to be nominated for this important task … I would encourage a robust and constructive debate of issues raised, but at all times with due consideration and respect for the dignity of the House."
