Gem of a bus captain deserves a shoutout

Letter from Ruth Cheng

I HAD the pleasure of witnessing a very courteous bus captain at work on Tuesday.

I took bus Service No 88 from Toa Payoh bus interchange at around 7.35pm and encountered an incident so rare in today's world.

As I boarded the bus, an old lady was asking how much the fare was to the bus stop at the Institute of Technical Education's Ang Mo Kio campus. The bus captain informed her that the journey cost $1.60.

By then, I was seated diagonally across from the bus captain. I heard the lady claim that she had no money and would ask the other passengers for cash.

The bus captain gently stopped her and dug out S$1.60 from his pocket, handed it to her and asked her to drop it into the cash box for her fare. I was amazed. The chance of such an incident happening is like striking first prize in TOTO.

His kindness did not stop there. At every bus stop, he greeted each passenger with a cheery "Good evening Sir/Ma'am". It was like sunshine after a long and weary day at work.

I do not know his name. But he was bespectacled and stocky, and the bus plate number was 7497E. I congratulate SBS Transit for having such a gem in its workforce.
