On Monday, Feb 28, the owl landed, injured, near the corner of the pitch during a match between Atletico Junior and Deportivo Pereira of Colombia. It was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area.
Play was stopped.
As the referee and players discussed what to do, Panamanian defender Luis Moreno - apparently impatient over the delay with his team losing 2-1 - was seen kicking the bird towards the touch-line with his left foot.
He had kicked the owl about three metres to get it off the field.
Luis Moreno could get up to three months in prison for kicking the owl.
A veterinarian, Camilo Tapia, said the owl went into shock on Wednesday, after having been taken in for treatment two days earlier.
