SINGAPORE - Eight men and 1 woman between 16 and 20 years of age have been arrested by the Singapore Police Force for suspected involvment in loanshark harassment activities.
The suspects are believed to be responsible for a spate of loanshark harassments in Serangoon, Lorong Ah Soo, Bedok, Tampines, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio and Jurong.
They used bicycle chains to lock debtors' units, sprayed paint and scrawled loan-shark related graffiti on walls. They also set fire to debtors' units.
The suspects will be charged under the Moneylenders' Act (Revised Edition 2010) for loanshark harassment. First time offenders found guilty of abetting in loanshark harassment can be fined between $5,000 and $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to five years.
They will also be caned up to six strokes.
