Taxi Driver Who Stole Haversack At Airport Nabbed

On 20 February 2011 at about 2.00 am, a Japanese national reported to the Airport Police that his haversack which contained Japanese currency amounting to more than SGD $42,000, a tablet computer, a laptop, two thumb drives, a wallet with two credit cards, a watch and other personal documents was missing. According to the victim, he had left his haversack at the kerb side of Changi Airport Terminal 2, Departure Drive after alighting there earlier.

Preliminary investigations by the Airport Police revealed that the victim’s haversack was believed to have been stolen by a taxi driver who had arrived at the said location shortly after him.

Through follow-up investigations and enquiries, officers from Airport Police Division managed to ascertain the identity of the suspect.

On the evening of 23 February 2011 , the suspect was arrested at Tampines Street 21. Upon his arrest, it was established that the suspect had already converted some of the Japanese currency into Singapore currency and purchased several items using some of the money. The purchased items were seized for investigations, along with cash of about SGD $8,500.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 25 February 2011 for the offence of Theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code Chapter 224 which carries a maximum jail term of three years imprisonment, or with fine or both .
