Businessman sues abbot for $1.39 million

The businessman, Mr Chua Kwee Sin, 46, alleges that he paid the abbot, Venerable Meow Di, 43 (photo), abbot of the Mei Feng Fo Xin Buddhist temple in Geylang Lorong 27, the amount to set up a casino in Cambodia which did not materialise.

Assured by the abbot, the businessman agreed to the business venture. He claimed that he forwarded S$1,394,860 over about 11 days in November 2009.

Venerable Meow is denying the claims, saying a third party named William Tan had proposed the casino project to Mr Chua.
