The Indiana Department of Corrections has fired Billie Ruffner for dereliction of duty for her failure to properly monitor accused cop killer Thomas Hardy.

Ruffner, a 28-year veteran of the DOC, apparently failed to do monthly checks on Hardy, which allowed him to go free. Hardy is accused of murdering Officer David Moore during a traffic stop Jan. 23, reports the Indianapolis Star.

Hardy was arrested in Indianapolis on theft charges in November while still on parole from another conviction. He was released from Marion County Jail in December on $15,000 bond.
