Accused admit ganging up on man they thought was a loanshark

SINGAPORE - A bank manager was injured in an unprovoked attack after three people mistook him for a loanshark who had defaced the front gate of their HDB flat, a district court heard yesterday.

Ong Kim Hua, his mother and uncle admitted they had ganged up against Mr Lee Jing Chong, 31, on March 15, 2009, after they found the front of their flat splashed with paint.

Ong, 33, was repainting the gate to his unit at Block 218, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, when he spotted Mr Lee walking along the corridor at around 5.45am.

Ong approached him and demanded to know what he was doing there.

Mr Lee, a bank manager, explained that he wanted to pass some medicine to a friend living in the block. Ong refused to believe him and accused him of being a loanshark.

The unemployed man then pushed Mr Lee and demanded that he hand over his belongings.

Ong then called for his uncle, Teo Ho Seng, 48, who was in the flat, to help him.

The two men rained blows on Mr Lee. Ong's mother, Teo Suan Kee, 58, soon joined in the attack, slapping and hitting Mr Lee when he was on the floor.
