The figure, released yesterday by the Department of Statistics (DOS), was close to analysts' estimate of a 4.5-per-cent year-on-year increase for December.

And analysts who spoke to MediaCorp expect the Government to intervene in the form of monetary tightening and targeted help for low-income families.

On Sunday, the Government had announced a one-off $154.8-million topping-up to the Edusave scheme.

Also, the Budget Statement will be delivered by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in Parliament on Feb 18, the Ministry of Finance said yesterday in a statement.

A webcast will be available at the Singapore Budget website singaporebudget.gov.sg .

The statement will also be uploaded progressively on the website as the speech is delivered.
