On the last day of 2014, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) seized the largest haul of heroin uncovered for the year.

Nearly 9.3kg of the drug was seized at Woodlands Checkpoint on Wednesday (Dec 31).

At about 7.30am on Wednesday, ICA officers conducted a routine check on a Malaysia-registered vehicle driven by a 28-year-old Malaysian man.

Packets of brown substance, suspected to be heroin, were discovered under the rear passenger seat.

Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were alerted, and 20 packets of heroin were seized. The heroin is estimated to have a total street value of more than S$649,000.

A 27-year-old Malaysian man in the Woodlands Town Garden area, suspected to be an associate of the 28-year-old driver, was arrested by CNB officers. Investigations on both men are ongoing. If convicted, they may face the death penalty.
