School of the Arts (SOTA) Singing and World Music teacher Dr Thomas Manhart boarded a Comfort Delgro taxi on Nov 20, thinking it would be a typical journey.

After some small talk, the taxi driver came to know of his occupation, and said he used to take singing lessons but never performed.

“I just asked if he wanted to sing something for me. Immediately, the moment I asked, I couldn’t believe it – it was a really good, full voice,” Dr Manhart recounted.

He said the taxi driver told him he is 63 years old and took singing lessons with a Chinese tenor, who studied voice in Italy and returned to Singapore in 1959 to teach.

“The quality of the voice at that age really surprised me... his singing lessons were so far back,” Dr Manhart said. The singing teacher decided to record a short video of the taxi driver's performance, which he uploaded to Facebook.

The video has since garnered nearly 10,000 views when Channel NewsAsia checked on Thursday evening at 6pm.

Dr Manhart admitted he “regrets” not finding out the driver’s identity as he was in a hurry, but believed he can still track down the driver, whom he described as very humble.

“The taxi drivers will probably ask around – they will know. He says he sings for his friends. He doesn’t perform in public, but he loves to sing when family comes together and friends come together,” the SOTA teacher said.
