Individuals in Singapore donated S$1.25 billion in total over the past 12 months, according to a biennial survey conducted by the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC).

The Individual Giving Survey 2014 showed that this amount is 14 per cent higher than the S$1.1 billion recorded in 2012's survey, said NVPC in a press release on Friday (Dec 19).

NVPC also said the average amount donated per person was S$379, up from S$312 in 2012. Those who earned below S$1,000 per month continued to give the highest proportion of their income.

Meanwhile, only 17.8 per cent of individuals volunteered, the survey showed. The top reason given for not volunteering was a lack of time.

Average volunteer hours, however, have grown to 93 hours, compared to 72 hours two years ago. The proportion of people who volunteered monthly also rose to 18 per cent, up from 11 per cent in 2012.
