Seven trapped in elevators during Golden Mile Complex fire

Two-hundred people evacuated from the Golden Mile Complex on Wednesday (Oct 1) after fire broke out on the ground floor.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a news release that they were alerted to the fire on Beach Road at 4.37pm.

They sent two fire engines, two ambulances, four support vehicles and a red rhino and on were on the scene within eight minutes.

A member of the public who sent in video of the incident said he saw "brown smoke" coming from the location.

SCDF said the fire broke out in an electrical room at the loading and unloading bay. They used two fire jets to extinguish the blaze.

SCDF said during the fire, two elevators on the eighth and tenth floor of the building had stopped working. SCDF pried open the lift door on the eighth floor and rescued two women, while five other people in another elevator were freed by a lift technician.

A woman in her 60s, who was trapped in one of the lifts, was sent to the Singapore General Hospital because she felt breathless.
