Just five months after he was jailed and fined for accidentally injuring a neighbour with illegal air guns, Lee Chee Kum was on Wednesday (Oct 8) sentenced to two weeks’ jail for illegal import of replica weapons.

The court heard that 52-year-old Lee, who has had a “fascination with such guns” since he was a child, brought in an arsenal of weapons – including 12 Airsoft guns, three replica rifles and pellets – after trips to Bangkok on Sep 17 and Oct 8 last year.

The 12 guns and paraphernalia were found in his luggage during immigration checks on Oct 12, 2013 upon his return from the second trip.

Lee, who had left the airport without his luggage after being told it was to be scanned, was arrested on the same day following his admission that he had wanted to “try his luck” even though he knew it was illegal to import guns without a licence.

Another three rifles were seized hours later on the same day near the shoreline of Upper Seletar Reservoir.

Lee admitted that he had brought them in on Sep 17 last year. Investigations later revealed that Lee’s younger brother had thrown the rifles into the reservoir. He had told Lee, who previously got into trouble for importing such guns, that he would chuck them if Lee bought them again.

Air guns are not allowed here unless a licence is issued by the Police Licensing and Regulatory Department.

For illegal import of the weapons, Lee could have been fined up to S$10,000 and jailed up to three years.
