Global police agency Interpol will open its first Digital Crime Centre in Singapore.
The centre at Napier Road will support member countries’ operations by providing law enforcement agencies with tools and techniques to counter the latest cybercrime trends.
It will also facilitate information sharing with the private sector – which could have critical information that could strengthen efforts and actions against cybercrime.
The centre is currently operating from a transitional support office in Singapore, and will eventually move to the new Interpol Global Complex for Innovation when the building opens in April next year.
The handover means Interpol can begin installing systems and equipment to commence operations in the building.
Given the threat landscape, it is clear that the Digital Crime Centre will be of "great value" to Singapore's police force.
A call for interest issued by Interpol earlier stated that the Digital Crime Centre will house a digital forensic lab and a cyber fusion centre.
The lab will be staffed by five IT experts and investigators, and will focus on “practical technology that provides investigators with the capacity to better coordinate and conduct national and regional investigations”, the document said.
The Digital Crime Centre is already making its mark in the region. Earlier this year, information sharing between the centre and law enforcement agencies led to a crackdown on sextortion cases.
Close to 200 people involved in organised crime groups operating out of the Philippines were identified.
