Starting October, a stretch of Orchard Road will be turned over to pedestrians on the first Saturday night of each month under a six-month pilot programme to create additional buzz in one of Singapore's most iconic districts.

Known as Pedestrian Night on Orchard Road, the road closure will be in effect from 6pm to 11pm along the 660-metre stretch between Scotts Road and Bideford Road; this will essentially involve the stretch in front of ION Orchard and Tang Plaza, right up to Paragon and Ngee Ann City.

Events such as street tennis - coinciding with the upcoming Women's Tennis Association Finals - and mass yoga will be organised on the relevant Saturdays in October and November to inject vibrancy and entertain the crowds.

With this initiative, Orchard Road joins other famous shopping streets such as Tokyo's Ginza and London's Regent Street, which are regularly shut to traffic to cater to shoppers and other events.
