Arsene Wenger desperately needs cover and quality in defence, especially after Thomas Vermaelen’s departure to Barcelona and also with Kieran Gibbs now out for several weeks with a hamstring injury.

Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are the first choice pairing in central defence and Calum Chambers is the only cover.

So it means the Gunners must buy.

Gunners boss Wenger has made Greek defender Kostas Manolas his top target to bolster his injury-hit defence.

Wenger is hopeful of completing a £6m deal for Manolas and Arsenal are having negotiations with Olympiacos for the 23-year-old centre half who has also been on Juventus’s hit-list.

Arsenal have been scouting Manolas who impressed for Greece during the World Cup, and his age and price make him a better deal than others.
