SEA Games: Singapore girls retain kayaking sprint gold title

In the four years since Singapore’s Stephenie Chen and Suzanne Seah first paired together, the national kayakers have achieved three golds and one silver in K2 events at Southeast Asian Games level.

Two of these golds were won at the ongoing Games in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.

For the second time in as many days, Chen and Seah proved their mettle and effectiveness as a duo by coming from behind to emerge as clear champions – now in the K2-200m finals held on Friday morning, the final day of kayak competition.

Their timing of 40.864s was a second clear of host country Myanmar and ensured that Chen and Seah keep the title they first won at the 2011 SEA Games.

Stephenie Chen later fronted the women’s K4 of herself, Geraldine Lee, Annabelle Ng and Sarah Chen to a bronze in the 200m race, just under 0.4s short of the gold won by Myanmar.

Also denied victory by the same tight margin was silver-medallist Mervyn Toh in the men’s K1-200m sprint.

The 21-year-old, participating in his first major competition, exploded from the blocks and led Thailand’s Kasemsit Borriboonwasin for most of the distance, before losing steam in the final 20m.

In total the Singapore kayakers delivered two golds, two silvers and two bronzes at this year’s SEA Games, short of the two golds, five silvers and three bronzes at the 2011 edition in Indonesia, but factoring in three less events for the men in 2013.
