The National Youth Council (NYC) is calling for community partners to submit proposals to jointly develop programmes for the volunteer youth corps.

The council, in a statement on Tuesday, said that it aims to set up its first batch of volunteer youth corps by mid-2014.

These community groups should work closely with members from the volunteer youth corps to develop service learning projects either locally or in the region, over the duration of three to six months.

The projects should focus on the following areas: education, health, arts, sport and heritage, special needs and environment.

The youth corps scheme, for those aged 15 to 35, is aimed mainly at students in the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities but is open to working adults.

Participants will receive training and mentoring, funding for projects, networking opportunities and allowances if they want to take time out from their studies for full-time volunteering.

Community partners are invited to submit their proposals through the NYC's online resource portal, www.resourceportal.nyc.sg, from now till the end of next month.
