Travel on the Downtown Line stage one (DTL1) will be free from Dec 22 to Jan 1. There are six stations - Chinatown, Telok Ayer, Downtown, Bayfront, Promenade and Bugis.

Fares are identical to those on the North-East Line and Circle Line. The new line will mean some shorter trips, and savings of two cents to 54 cents per journey. For example, travelling from Promenade to Kallang via DTL1 and East-West Line can save 54 cents.

The DTL1 will be included in an ongoing trial allowing those who exit at any of 18 stations in the city before 7.45am on weekdays to travel for free. Their journey must not start at any of the 18 stations.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will introduce seats painted in bright colours on Downtown Line trains with designs so conspicuous that commuters will know the seats are set aside for those who need them more.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo told The Sunday Times that the designs are meant to make commuters think twice before sitting.

Commuters have four seat designs to choose from, each with a different message such as "Show you care - Make their trip better by offering this seat".

Before a final design is selected, LTA wants to gather public feedback.

They can vote for the design they deem as most effective via SMS or LTA's Facebook page from Dec 22 till Feb 1. The most popular design will then appear in all trains on the six-station line.
