Aspiring hawkers will get a chance to hone their culinary skills under a new Hawker Master Trainer pilot programme, jointly launched by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and the National Environment Agency. The programme also consists of a Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) training.
Fifty participants will undergo on-the-job training with Singapore's veteran hawkers under this initiative that will start later this year. Veteran hawkers, identified as Hawker Master Trainers, are selected mainly from the CEOs' Hawker Guide.
Project Dignity, WDA's Continuing Education and Training Centre for the F&B sector, has been appointed to train the participants in foundational WSQ modules that are essential for hawker stall operations.
Trainees will have the opportunity to apply what they have learnt at hawker stalls for a period of time within hawker centres designated by National Environment Agency (NEA). Subsequently, they may tender for stalls at hawker centres of their choice via NEA's Tender Scheme.
WDA's Director of Tourism Division Janice Foo said: "With the Hawker Master Trainer pilot programme, we want to groom a new generation of ‘hawkerpreneurs’ to preserve our country's popular dishes and traditional hawker fare."
