Russia qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 2002 with a 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan.

It looked like Russia would finish their qualifying campaign with a win as Roman Shirokov gave them a 15th-minute lead, but it only lasted until the final minute of the game, when Vagif Javadov equalised for the hosts. He had only been on the field for seven minutes when he met Mahir Shukurov's cross with his head.

Azerbaijan were already down to 10 men by then after Maksim Medvedev was shown a straight red card for a foul.

Whatever the case, it was job done as far as Capello was concerned.
