Denmark secured second place in World Cup qualifying Group B with a 6-0 win over Malta but missed out on a play-off as they finished the weakest of the nine runners-up.

The game was over as a contest by the interval, with two Daniel Agger penalties and strikes from Morten Rasmussen and Andreas Bjelland giving the hosts a commanding 4-0 lead.

Rasmussen and substitute Nicki Bille Nielsen netted further goals in the closing stages to seal an emphatic triumph, but it was not enough.
