In most cases, their families can help them to order their food, but have to do so in the hospital.
But from next month, families of patients at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) will be able to order meals for them from outside of the hospital through a website that is being rolled out.
It will be the first of its kind in Singapore.
The hospital says that with the new website, it hopes to build greater ownership of patient care among families.
While the website will only be up next month, meal ordering at the hospital has already gone high-tech.
Nurses there have been armed with iPads that show customised menus.
This reduces the need for scribblings on meal slips, or spending time to clarify orders with kitchen staff.
The hospital says it saves 7 man hours a day with the Electronic Meal Ordering System.
Nurses are also picking up 60 percent less calls from the kitchen, allowing them to focus their time on patient care.
The Electronic Meal Ordering System and its web interface will be also used at the new Yishun Community Hospital, which will open in 2015.
