For most of her life, Madam Goh Jok Eng, 65, has had trouble walking and suffered knee pains.

But now, she claims that she can even run faster than her husband, Mr Yip Ren Chang, after knee replacement surgery in September that was sponsored by Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

Madam Goh works six days a week as a glass washer in a nightclub while her husband suffers from gout and cannot work. The couple survive on her monthly income of $1,200.

Knee replacement surgery usually costs between $21,000 and $25,000.

She said: “I was scared to go for the operation because I don’t have the money. As the sole breadwinner, I felt that money would just go to waste if I spent it to fix my knee.”

Madam Goh was one of the four beneficiaries of the “Life Renewed @ Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital”, an inaugural corporate social responsibility project offering free knee replacements to needy elderly.
