Is the job scope for the new LionsXII coach unrealistic?
Following V Sundramoorthy’s resignation, the vacant LionsXII post is a hot seat waiting to be filled and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has set out its criteria for the new coach.
In an advertisement placed in yesterday’s The Straits Times and on the FAS website, the federation listed specific responsbilities for the new LionsXII coach, such as:
- Administration and management of the team
- Developing and delivering a coaching programme, and
- Working closely with the national team coach, technical director and staff coaches
However, two of the five-point “specific responsiblities”, understood to have been laid down by the FAS technical team, have raised eyebrows among those in the football fraternity.
One is the extensive talent scouting across the country and overseas to ensure strong team selection, and the other is the mentoring and assisting in the career development of the National Football Academy (NFA) staff coaches.
Former LionsXII assistant coach Kadir Yahaya spoke from his experience and said: “There is just not enough time... with all the travelling and training sessions, where does the LionsXII coach find time to mentor other coaches when he has to be 100 per cent focused on his own team?”
While ex-national defender R Sasikumar felt that the FAS would have its reasons for setting such criteria, he also felt that the LionsXII coach should be predominantly occupied with the team’s showing in the Malaysian Super League.
