Train services on the North-South and East-West lines may start as late as noon on some Sundays.

This is because SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are looking to accelerate their sleeper replacement programme, which is meant to stabilise the track condition for train operations.

They aim to change all 188,000 sleepers, those on the North-South line by 2015 and those on the East West line by 2016. Only 11,000 have been replaced so far.

To allow more time for the engineering works, the working hours may be extended on weekends.

Suspended train services on some Sunday mornings is a possibility, an SMRT spokesman said on Tuesday.
