Police said today that the liquid substance found on the seat of an MRT train last week, causing burns to a passenger, is likely to be sodium hydroxide, a cleaning agent.

Investigations are still ongoing.

A 52-year-old man was arrested on Sunday (May 5) in connection with the incident. The suspect was identified when key images of him were recovered from the CCTV systems on the MRT stations.

Police had initially suspected that the substance was sulphuric acid. Sodium hydroxide is corrosive and can cause chemical burns.

On May 2, a 24-year-old nurse, Ms Wan Zahfirah Arshad, was hospitalised with a burn injury after discovering a yellowish substance on her clothes after sitting on an unknown substance on a north-south line train departing from Jurong East.

On April 22, a teenager was burnt after sitting on an unknown substance at a bus stop at Bukit Batok. Police told Channel NewsAsia last week that they are not ruling out that these two cases could be linked.
