Milan 2 Barcelona 0
Eleven minutes into the second half, Milan set up for a free kick a shade to the left side about 25 yards from the Barcelona goal. A shot after the ball was put back in play appeared to strike the hand of Cristian Zapata, then it fell to Kevin-Prince Boateng for a hard shot that beat Victor Valdés to the near post. Was it a hand ball?
Before the goal, Milan was packing 10 players in defense, and with a goal advantage there was little incentive to alter that strategy.
A quick passing combination, Boateng (head then instep flick) to Stephan El Shaarawy to Sulley Muntari (for a killing volley), and quicker than you can say tiki-taki, Milan takes a two-goal lead, which makes a trip to the Camp Nou a test … for Barcelona.
Galatasaray 1 Schalke 1
Burak Yılmaz scored his seventh goal in seven Champions League games this season using an impressive first touch to flick the ball to himself before powering a hard shot over Schalke keeper Timo Hildebrand.
It looked as if the first-place team in Turkey’s Super Lig would end the half with the one-goal advantage until the American international Jermaine Jones first-timed a pass from Jefferson Farfán to tie the game. Ten minutes earlier, Jones had been shown a yellow card when he was fouled and motioned to Referee William Collum that a card should be given. Problem was, it was Jones who received the card.
