A visually impaired passenger complained that he was not allowed to board a flight on budget carrier Scoot at the last minute, despite having already purchased ticket.

According to Shin Min Daily News, 33-year-old old Mr Zheng Jing Long, an IT technician, alleged that the budget airline denied him entry, saying that those who require assistance on board the flight would need to be accompanied by a relative.

Mr Zheng lost his sight six years ago due to an eye disease. His wife and son live in Sydney, and he makes the journey to see them twice a year.

Mr Zheng said that he usually flies by Singapore Airlines, but decided to purchase a Scoot ticket online last year as the price of the ticket was cheaper. He is able to travel by himself, but requires some assistance only when boarding and disembarking the aircraft.

Mr Zheng says a friend had helped him to contact the airline three days after buying the ticket to inform them that he would require additional assistance due to his impairment.

However, the Chinese daily reported that the airline did not have any such record.

Despite passengers around who said they were willing to assist him on the flight, the airline still did not allow him in, and told Mr Zheng that he will get a refund on his ticket.

However, Mr Zheng says he was only refunded $140, and not the full price of the ticket, which he bought for $600.

According to Scoot, they do not have records of Mr Zheng's visual impairment, nor could they verify if the phone call from Mr Zheng's friend was made.

A Scoot spokesperson said that Scoot will only provide a full refund if it was found that they had made a mistake. However in this case, the airline did not receive any advance notification, and Mr Zheng was boarding unaccompanied.

But after considering Mr Zheng's account, Scoots says it will be making an exception this time round and will be giving Mr Zheng a full refund.
