Microsoft said today that its Surface Pro tablets will be available for purchase starting on Feb. 9.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro, as Microsoft is calling it, is powered by the Intel Core i5 processor and runs the full Windows 8 operating system.

On Feb. 9, the Surface Pro will be available for purchase in Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. and Canada, online at microsoftstore.com, and in Staples and Best Buy in the U.S. and in some locations in Canada.

As Microsoft had previously announced, pricing for the Surface Pro will start at US$899 for the 64 GB version.

That price doesn't include the keyboard that can be attached magnetically. Those are being sold separately.

The Touch Cover -- the thinner of the two -- is being sold for US$120. (New, limited editions of the Touch Cover in red, magenta and cyan and that feature laser etched designs are also being produced, to retail for US$130.)

The Type Cover -- the slightly thicker cover with traditional keyboard feel -- is being sold for US$130.

In addition, a 64GB standalone version of Surface RT will be sold for US$599.
