He was burnt alive while trapped in his car early yesterday morning after crashing into a concrete barricade.
The driver is believed to have lost control of his vehicle and skidded. It was drizzling and the roads were slippery at the time of the accident - 5.10am - when he crashed his Hyundai Avante into the barricade. The car burst into flames.
The tragedy occurred at the junction of Hillview Road and Upper Bukit Timah Road, next to a construction site opposite a church.
The man, known only as Mr Hee, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was believed to have been alone in the car. A woman at the scene said that before the crash, the car driven by Mr Hee had grazed another car, reported Lianhe Wanbao.
Mr Hee continued to drive while the other vehicle stopped by the roadside.
Mr Hee rounded a bend and crashed into the yellow-and-black striped barricade, bursting into flames. Passers-by attempted to save Mr Hee but were thwarted by the fire. The driver's door was still closed as the car burnt.
The SCDF firefighters put out the blaze, which had engulfed mostly the front of the car and eventually found Mr Hee's charred body in the driver's seat. It was so badly charred that his family members couldn't recognise him initially.
Mr Hee's family members arrived at about 7.30pm. A woman in her 50s was heard wailing in Mandarin: "My son, my son!" A man in his 50s was consoling her. He looked to be in shock. A young woman was also seen crying inconsolably.
When the body of Mr Hee was retrieved from the car, the elder woman again burst into tears.
Mr Hee was earlier at a gathering with some friends, said his father. He was believed to have been on his way home when the horrific accident took place. His mother had been waiting for him to return since 2am, but he never did.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
